What Is a Hosted Group Trip? How Hosted Group Travel Works

If you’ve heard the term “hosted group travel,” you may wonder exactly what that means.
When I say I’m “hosting” a trip, I sometimes wonder if people picture me standing at the front of a tour bus with a microphone.
That’s definitely not what I have in mind.
For me, a hosted group trip means I’ve chosen a destination and experience I’m excited about, invited a small group of travelers to join me, and I’m there as both a fellow traveler and an extra layer of support.
What Is Hosted Group Travel?
Hosted group travel combines the shared experience of a group vacation with the added benefit of having a travel advisor traveling with the group.
Exactly what is included varies by trip, but my Hosted Journeys are designed to give travelers the camaraderie of a group while still allowing them to enjoy their own vacation.
And there's one particularly important distinction with my hosted trips: I'm actually going with you.
I’m Actually Traveling With You
This is one of the biggest differences between a trip I arrange for a client and one of my Hosted Journeys.
On a hosted journey, I’m going too.
I’m experiencing the destination alongside the group, sharing meals, joining activities and probably taking far too many pictures just like everyone else.
I’m not there to replace your tour director, cruise manager, local guides or the professionals responsible for operating the trip. They’re the experts in those roles.
I’m there as your travel advisor.
You Have Someone Who Already Knows You and Your Trip
By the time we leave, I’ve already been involved with the trip for months.
I know the itinerary. I know my travelers. I know the arrangements we made before departure, and I understand how all the pieces are supposed to fit together.
That can be reassuring, particularly when you’re traveling somewhere unfamiliar.
If a question comes up, you don't have to start from scratch explaining your trip to someone. I'm right there and already know the background.
A Lot Happens Before a Hosted Trip Ever Leaves
Hosting really begins long before we meet at the destination.
There are reservations, deadlines, travel documents, flights, transfers, insurance considerations and all the little questions that inevitably come up before a big trip.
One of my strengths has always been taking a lot of moving pieces and organizing them into something manageable.
I spent more than 25 years in a professional world where managing details, deadlines, people and unexpected problems was simply part of the job. Travel advising gives me the opportunity to use those same skills for something I love.
And when I'm hosting a group, I get to use them for the people traveling with me.
You’re Part of the Group, But It’s Still Your Vacation
This is really important to me.
I don’t want my hosted trips to feel like summer camp for adults.
There will be opportunities for us to spend time together, but couples and friends should also be able to enjoy time on their own.
If you want to join everyone for cocktails, wonderful. If you want a quiet dinner for two one night, do it. If there are different excursion choices, choose the one that sounds best to you.
The idea is to have the camaraderie and reassurance of traveling with a group without giving up the freedom to enjoy your own vacation.
What Are the Benefits of a Hosted Group Trip?
For me, the biggest benefits of hosted group travel are the combination of thoughtful preparation, shared experiences and having a familiar person along who already knows your trip.
Some travelers also find that joining a hosted group gives them the confidence to try a destination they might not have chosen on their own.
You get the opportunity to meet other travelers while still traveling as a couple, with friends or on your own.
Why Do I Host Group Trips?
Because there are so many places in the world I want to experience, and I know other people who want to experience them too.
Some destinations are particularly well suited to traveling with others. And some people are more likely to say yes to an unfamiliar destination when they know they’ll be going with a small group and a travel advisor they already know.
I also genuinely enjoy taking care of people.
I can’t promise that every flight will be on time, every suitcase will arrive when it should or that travel will always go exactly according to plan. No travel advisor can.
What I can do is plan thoughtfully, communicate clearly, help prepare you for the trip, and be there with you when we travel.
And then, hopefully, we get to experience somewhere pretty incredible togeth
