The Benefits of Small Group Travel: Why I Love It (And Why You Might, Too)

There’s something special about traveling with other people. Some of my favorite travel memories aren’t just about where I was. They’re about who I was with when I experienced it.
That’s one of the reasons I’m such a fan of small group travel.
For me, the benefits of small group travel come down to having people to share the experience with, having some of the planning and logistics taken care of, and still having enough freedom to make the trip your own.
I’m not talking about following a flag through Europe with 50 strangers or spending every waking moment together. The kind of group travel I enjoy has the best of both worlds: shared experiences when you want them and time to do your own thing when you don’t.
1. You Have People to Share the Experience With
Think about some of your favorite travel memories. Chances are, part of what made them memorable was sharing them with someone else.
There’s something fun about sitting around a table at the end of the day talking about what everyone saw, laughing about something that happened on an excursion, or having someone else say, “Wasn’t that incredible?”
With a small group, those shared experiences often become as memorable as the destination itself.
2. You Can Be Social Without Doing Everything Together
This is important to me.
Traveling with a small group doesn’t have to mean the entire group moves as one unit from breakfast until bedtime.
On a well-planned group trip, there should be opportunities to do things together and opportunities to go your own way. Maybe several people want to take a more active excursion while others prefer something leisurely. Some might meet for a drink before dinner while another couple decides they need a quiet evening on their own.
You’re traveling together. You don’t have to be attached at the hip.
That balance is one of the reasons I think small group travel can work especially well for couples and friends who enjoy meeting people but still value their independence.
3. Some Destinations Feel More Approachable With a Group
There are places in the world I’m excited to experience but where I might feel more comfortable going with a small group than completely on my own.
Having other travelers along can make a new or unfamiliar destination feel less intimidating. You still get the excitement of going somewhere completely different, but you have the comfort of familiar faces and a shared plan.
For empty nesters and couples who are ready to venture farther from the places they’ve traditionally vacationed, I think this can be a great way to expand your travel horizons.
4. Someone Else Is Keeping Track of the Details
This may be one of the biggest advantages of small group travel.
There are a lot of moving pieces involved in travel, especially when a trip includes multiple destinations, transportation, tours and activities.
When I organize a group, my goal is for my travelers to spend less time worrying about those details and more time enjoying where they are.
That doesn’t mean nothing unexpected will ever happen. This is travel, after all. Flights change. Weather happens. Plans occasionally need to be adjusted.
But you’re not figuring everything out alone.
5. You May Come Home With New Friends
One of the things I love about a small group is that people have time to actually get to know one another.
You start with a group of people who already have at least one thing in common: they chose the same trip.
Then you spend days experiencing new places together, sharing meals and swapping stories. Connections happen pretty naturally.
And sometimes the people you meet become the people you want to travel with again.
Is Small Group Travel Right for You?
Small group travel isn’t for everyone.
If your perfect vacation means having absolutely no schedule, deciding what to do each morning and spending most of your time completely on your own, a group trip might not be your first choice.
But if you like having the major details taken care of, enjoy meeting people, still want some independence and love the idea of sharing an amazing destination with others, a small group vacation can be a wonderful way to travel.
It’s one of the reasons I’m excited to incorporate more hosted and small group journeys into my own travel business.
The destination matters. But sometimes the people you experience it with make the trip even better.
